Skier
Bridges, Yellowstone Development, LLC
Big Sky, Montana
Allied Engineering Services,
Inc. worked with the Yellowstone Club to provide structural
design and grade separation between vehicular access to residences
and skiers accessing lifts. The grade separations were provided
by a series of four bridges. Several provided for vehicles
to pass over the skier paths while the others routed skiers
over the road.
The crossing locations proved
to be challenging for designing bridges with steep grades,
sharp skew angles and existing ski lift locations. In several
locations the result was massive abutments and wing walls
to retain the large earth embankments. Steel beams and a
concrete deck were chosen for longevity and structural capacity.
Snow grooming equipment and vehicles as well as skiers will
be using the bridges.
Due to the location within
an upscale residential community, aesthetics were a major
consideration for these structures. To accommodate the demand
for bridges that fit with the setting, the design incorporated
stone facing for all walls and abutments. Project completion
date was 2003.
